#38 – Home of Mahalia Jackson

As I thought about Black History Month and all the contributions that were made by Chicagoans. I wanted to feature the home of one of those Chicago greats who lived on the south side.

If you are anywhere near the Chatham community just driving. Be sure to drive past 8358 S. Indiana.  This was the home of Gospel Legend Mahalia Jackson.  She purchased the home in 1956.

Born in New Orleans, Jackson migrated to Chicago in hopes of being a nurse. But obviously her talent as a singer overshadowed that goal. Early in her singing career, Mahalia was an entrepreneur. Mahalia’s Beauty Salon and Mahalia’s House of Flowers sustained her while her career was in its infancy stages.  ”Move on Up a Little Higher” was a million dollar hit. Jackson performed at the inaugural ball of President John F. Kennedy in 1961.

The house is not open for tours or the public as it is occupied by another local name, Senator Roland Burris. So drive by and take a look at the home of a former and current South Side SUPER STAR!
